protein and it is conceivable that some residual soiling may still have been present on the diathermy pencils but below the level of detection. Visual inspection of all of the diathermy pencils also revealed a scored topography due to repeated use and cleaning (Figure 1). The rough surfaces of the pencils may serve as a base for residual soiling from human sources to remain firmly attached despite some cleaning procedures used in hospitals. The results from this current investigation suggest that diathermy pencils may provide a vector for the transmission of prions associated with vCJD. Moreover, infection control teams need to be aware of this problem and rigorous pre-sterilization cleaning protocols should be implemented to remove traces of blood or tissue that may remain on the surface of scored pencils. Conversely, single-use disposable diathermy pencils incorporated into surgical procedures, particularly those involving the central nervous system and lymphatic tissue, would eliminate the potential transmission of prions by these instruments. Furthermore, the cost of a single-use disposable diathermy pencil is currently less than £2.00. This compares favourably with the total cost associated with the cleaning and sterilization of reusable diathermy devices, which we have estimated to be £5.00 per pencil. The authors wish to thank MSB for the educational grant, Carole Rawlings and Karen Badger for the provision of post-surgery diathermy pencils and Sharon Fox for the costing associated with cleaning and sterilizing reusable diathermy devices.

Antimicrobial Resistance Pattern of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Isolates from a Tertiary Care Setting in Rawalpindi, Pakistan
Introduction: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is intrinsically resistant to many antimicrobials. Like Pseudomonas spp., this bacterium has a remarkable ability to cause infections, particularly in the respiratory and urinary tracts. This study aims to determine the antimicrobial resistance pattern of S. maltophilia isolates collected from a tertiary care setting and frequency of multi, extensively...
متن کاملMultilocus Sequence Typing for Molecular Epidemiology of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Clinical and Environmental Isolates from a Tertiary Hospital in West of Iran
Background: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an opportunistic bacterium, contributing to different hospital-acquired infections and can be acquired from different hospital setting sources. Epidemiological study of S. maltophilia in the hospital also demonstrates the intrahospital distribution of certain strains of bacteria in healthcare facilities. The aim of the current study was to identify th...
متن کاملAntimicrobial Susceptibility of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Clinical Isolates from Blood Samples in Iran
Introduction: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a nosocomial multi drug resistant opportunistic pathogen which causes infections in vulnerable patients with cancer, cystic fibrosis and indwelling catheters. Methods: 45 clinical S. maltophilia isolates were collected from blood samples and identified by biochemical tests. Susceptibility to different antibiotics including co-trimoxazole, levofloxac...
متن کاملPrevalence of antibiotic resistance and integrons, sul and Smqnr genes in clinical isolates of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia from a tertiary care hospital in Southwest Iran
Objective(s): Stenotrophomonas maltophilia has emerged as an important opportunistic nosocomial pathogen due to its intrinsic and acquired resistance to a wide range of antimicrobial agents. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of antibiotic resistance and resistance mechanisms among clinical isolates of S. maltophilia from Iranian patients.<...
متن کاملSkin manifestation of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infection--a case report and review article.
INTRODUCTION Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an aerobic gram-negative bacillus that is a frequent coloniser of fluids used in the hospital setting. It causes infection in immunosuppressed hosts, especially those who are neutropaenic, on chemotherapy and broad spectrum antibiotics. Skin and soft tissue manifestations of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infection are becoming an increasingly recognis...
